Dear Ms Arden,
Hi my name is Rachael Smith and I am a year five student at Halsey Drive School. This week at my school we have been learning about Matariki. After some discussion in my class we decided that Matariki should get recognised to more people around the world and should be made a national holiday. It has been an very important celebration for the Maori people 200 years ago.
In my opinion there are limited public holidays in New Zealand and people who work in shops get 9 holidays out of 365 working days but for the people who work in a school or an office they get 9 public holidays out of 260 working days and there are only 3 public holidays related to New Zealand
My second reason is that in 1920-1930 Matariki stopped being acknowledge even by the Maori and I think it is very important to acknowledge our bi - culture history of New Zealand. We should be learning stories and keep Teo Reo alive!! Being New Zealand Te Reo should be should be very important to us. If you were born here in New Zealand it is more likely that New Zealand is your home country. There should be a lot celebrated in New Zealand as it is good to acknowledge things like this.
Mrs Arden I hope it is now clear to you that Matariki should be a national public holiday because we have limited public holidays with only 3 related to New Zealand and we do have people how have to work on holidays. We should be acknowledging our bi-cultural history of NZ and keep Teo Reo alive!!!
